Commercial Director at Oaklands College
I am the Commercial Director for Oaklands College, a grade 2 vocational college that offers around 1,500 full and part-time courses to nearly 10,000 students. The role of Commercial Director was created due to the continuous reductions in government funding; colleges now have to become more commercially minded and look for independent ways of generating income for long term financial sustainability.
Prior to starting life at Oaklands College in January 2014, I held a diverse range of positions in various sectors, including events planning in luxury 5 star hotels, setting up a ski chalet in Vermont, USA, Marketing Manager for an asset management company and Commercial Manager for a University. The opportunity at Oaklands College enabled me to collate all my experience into one role and has allowed me to understand the world of Further Education.
I look at ways to generate income for the College either by the utilisation of college assets, partnership working or investigating external funding opportunities. During the initial 2 years at Oaklands College I have designed and created a more commercial brand for the commercial market. We have also launched the initial 4 business including: ‘The Stables restaurant, The Mansion House meeting space, Sports Zone and summer camp. Now starting the third year I aim to continue to grow and expand the commercial offering whilst providing real life work experience opportunities for students to work within this business. The second arm to my role includes the promotion of traineeships, apprenticeships to local organisation and how we can feedback from the business community the change in needs to bridge the current skills gap.
Outside of work I thoroughly enjoy being active and outdoors in the fresh air. This could be participating in the local park runs, swimming, sailing or socialising with friends and family. As long as I enjoy my weekends as much as my weeks, I am a content individual.
